The short version
These are desktop games — Windows, macOS or Linux on a computer, not a phone or tablet. Read the publisher's own minimum and recommended specifications, then compare them with what your machine actually reports. If the game runs but stutters, the graphics preset is the first thing to change. If matches feel delayed rather than choppy, that is latency, and it is a network distance problem rather than a hardware one.
Which platforms this category runs on
The titles covered here, including the one this site has a commercial relationship with, are desktop software. That means a computer running Windows, macOS or Linux. There is no phone or tablet version to fall back on, and a Chromebook or a locked-down school laptop will generally not run one either.
Support across the three desktop operating systems is uneven. Windows is where the category is developed and tested first. macOS and Linux builds exist for several titles, sometimes lagging behind on features or on driver support for particular hardware. The publisher's own system requirements page states which of the three it supports and at what versions, and that page is the one to check before assuming anything.
The parts that actually matter
- Graphics card
- The biggest single factor in whether the game looks smooth. Vehicle games render long sight lines and a lot of terrain, which is demanding in a different way from a corridor shooter. An older card usually means lowering the preset rather than not playing.
- Processor
- Matters more here than in many genres, because the game simulates physics for many vehicles at once and keeps them in step with everyone else in the match. A weak processor shows up as stutter in crowded moments rather than a uniformly low frame rate.
- Memory
- Not glamorous, and the most common practical bottleneck on older machines. When the game runs out of RAM it starts using the drive instead, which is when you get the freeze that lasts a second and a half at the worst moment.
- Storage
- A solid-state drive changes load times and reduces the pauses when terrain streams in. It does not change your frame rate. You also need free space well beyond the finished install size for the download and its unpacking.
- Screen
- A high-refresh monitor helps if the rest of the machine can feed it. It cannot invent frames the graphics card is not producing, so it is the last upgrade rather than the first.
How to read your own specifications
You do not need a diagnostic tool for this, and the ones advertised alongside game guides are worth avoiding. Every operating system will tell you directly.
- Windows. Open Settings, then System, then About, for the processor and installed memory. For the graphics card, press the Windows key, type dxdiag, run it and read the Display tab.
- macOS. Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. That gives the chip, the memory and the graphics. More detail sits behind the System Report button.
- Linux. Most desktop environments have a Settings or About panel with the same information. In a terminal, lscpu reports the processor, free -h the memory, and lspci | grep -i vga the graphics adapter.
Write the three numbers down, then open the publisher's system requirements page and compare. Meeting the minimum specification means the game will start and be playable at low settings; meeting the recommended one means it should be comfortable at moderate settings. Neither is a promise, because the rest of what your machine is doing matters too.
Before you conclude the computer is too slow
Close the browser. A few dozen tabs, a video paused in one of them and a chat client in the background will take memory and graphics resources the game wanted. On a laptop, plug in the power adapter: many will throttle performance hard on battery, and the same machine can behave like two different computers depending on which. Check that the laptop's vents are not against a doona, too — thermal throttling looks exactly like a game being too demanding.
Ping, latency and why Australia is a special case
Latency is the time it takes a message to travel from your computer to the game server and back. It is not the same as download speed, and this is the single most common confusion in the category. A connection can deliver a large file quickly and still take a long time to deliver one small message, and it is the small messages that decide whether your shot registers.
Distance is the part nobody can optimise away. A signal crossing an ocean takes time to do it, and that time is added to every exchange with the server regardless of what you pay your internet provider. If a game's servers for your region are far away, ping will be higher than it is for a player sitting near them, and the practical consequence is that you should choose an Australian or regional server in the game's settings whenever one is offered.
What you can influence is everything inside your house. Wired Ethernet is consistently better than wireless for this, not because it is faster but because it is steadier — and steadiness is what matters for a shot that has to land at a specific moment. Other devices doing large transfers on the same connection will add variability. So will a router that has been running for months without a restart.

The settings worth changing first
Start with the overall preset rather than individual options — it moves a dozen settings at once and tells you quickly whether the machine is in the right range. If low is smooth and high is not, work upward one step at a time. The options that usually cost the most performance for the least visible benefit are shadow quality, ambient effects and any form of expensive anti-aliasing. Draw distance is the one worth protecting in this category, because seeing something at range is a large part of the game.
Resolution scaling deserves a mention: rendering the game slightly below your screen's native resolution and letting it scale up is often the difference between choppy and smooth on an older card, and it is far less noticeable in motion than the numbers suggest.
What to watch out for
- Driver updater utilities. Get graphics drivers from the manufacturer's own site. The advertised updaters bundle things you did not want.
- Game booster and optimiser software. Almost all of it changes settings you can change yourself, and some of it is exactly the kind of unnecessary software the Australian Cyber Security Centre advises keeping off a machine you also use for banking.
- Claims that a VPN reduces ping. Routing your traffic through an extra server usually adds delay. There are narrow cases where a different path helps, but treat the general claim with suspicion.
- Registry cleaners and cracked performance mods. No performance benefit worth the risk to the computer or the account.
Data allowances and shared connections
The initial download is large enough to matter on a metered service, and the game will keep patching after that — sometimes substantially, when a major update lands. Ongoing play uses comparatively little data, because the messages are small and frequent rather than bulky. If your household is on a capped or fixed wireless plan, the install is the event to plan around, not the playing.
